Happy Birthday Lata M! You truly are India’s Nightingale

Having met her once in my life, I can assure you, she truly is a gentle soul. A melody in her voice, a note on her lips and a tune dancing in her eyes at all times. Lata Mangeshkar, a singer, performer and an artist at heart is one of the few who have worked with over 4 generations of the film industry.

Modest about her talent, Didi a she is fondly called, is every music lover’s dream come true. Enjoy this fact-o-file on Lata Mangeshkar

Loved by many, Lata sang for multiple actresses, but it was Saira Banu who would ensure her film contracts stated that Lata sang for her.

Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, a patriotic song, against the backdrop of the Sino-India war in 1963, moved the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru to tears.

The first hindi song she sang was ‘Mata Ek Sapoot’ for the Marathi film ‘Gajaabhaau’ (1943)

At 87, she has sung songs in over 36 regional Indian and foreign languages.

WHY THE CLINTON VS TRUMP PRESIDENTIAL BLOCKBUSTER IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT POPCORN!

Alarm for 9pm New York time ?  Check

Cable Bill paid?  Check

Fellow movie lovers invited? Check

Popcorn in Microwave? Check

The US presidential debate honestly should not gather such popularity in a country that has live action to the best drama series that even Netflix would be jealous of.

Ofcourse, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha TV channels in India are the gateway to the ways of distinguished politicians in the world’s largest democracy. From screaming, shouting, calling names, destroying public property, throwing microphones at speakers to tearing policy papers, these stalwarts have shown how politics = entertainment . While we have enjoyed our share of cheap politics, we look forward to this one because it rarely stoops to such lows in the domains of these Super Powers

So this US presidential debate promises to keep you glued. On one hand you have a corporate honcho who has little control over his mouth and on the other an ex first lady struggling with her health. It will be interesting to see if it will transform into a bully vs the bullied, men vs women or even a 5 yr old vs a 50-year-old debate depending on the personality suit, the versatile Donald Trump chooses to don.

100 million viewers who are expected to be watching in the US alone, can look forward to character assassinations, childish behaviour, misconduct and endless screeching that would put our own Arnab ji to shame.

While Trump has not participated in many debates in this quest for the White House, Hillary has not only debated this season, but also engaged in 25 one on one debates with Barack Obama in 2008.

Presidential debates are key for those who have chosen to ignore the cacophony over the last months, only to make up their mind with this last series of face offs. They are also a turning point for those sitting on the fence, because while policies and agendas are important,  who they want to be led by over the next year’s is crucial.

So whether Donald trumps Hillary or Hillary trumps Donald, make sure you enjoy the show with the best seat in the house!

How to you turn #SUNday into #FUNday

Who doesn’t like a Sunday ? The after party lazy morning that promises to be everything the week wasn’t. But from my close to 2000 Sundays spent on Mother Earth, I have come to the conclusion that the only way to avoid Monday Blues, is to make the most of your Sunday.

So choose one or all of the below and I promise you Sundays will never be the same again!

PICK A CULINARY DISH YOU HAVE BEEN LONGING TO RECREATE

For the chefs-in-making, decide on Friday on the dish you want to make on Sunday. This gives you enough time to get all the ingredients together, more importantly, you end up looking forward to the kitchen time.

ZERO IN ON A JOINT YOU HAVE NOT TRIED

If you are only a connoisseur of food not a creator, how about researching and trying out a new place every Sunday. You could work on diff themes like cuisines or the kind of places you want to discover-street side, bhawans, start ups , food trucks or fancy or even breakfast/lunch/dinner or even mid meal speciality places. Once you pick a course of action, I can promise you the journey is delectable!

PREBOOK A PLAY/ MUSIC RECITAL/DANCE PERFORMANCE

For the Arts inclined, make a calendar of the performances you want to attend. I find, Pre booking is key to this , as it makes sure your intent doesn’t dwindle and you are mentally looking forward to the experience( helping you get through the week!)

DISCOVER THE 5 TOURISTY AND NON TOURISTY PLACES IN YOUR CIYY

You will gawk if I tell you, I have never been to Red Fort or Qutub Minar in Delhi. I have only lived here 35 years and still just managed to not make it there. I am sure though there are such popular and some hidden gems in your city, that you too take for granted. I recommend taking time out for a heritage walk or guided tour. I can guarantee it will change the way you think of your city.

PROJECT PARTY IN THE PARK

Now this is my all time favorite- Do you know Delhi has 18000 parks? How many have you been to ?  This works great for people with kids, groups who like to get together to play music, fitness enthusiasts and specially the ones who love picnics! Go on and discover the Park Adventures

I am sure most of you have noticed, our best friend TV does not feature in this list. After all the time we spend with it during the week, don’t you think your TV deserves a Sunday?

Your guide to choosing the best that Restaurant Week offers

While properties like Restaurant week have been popping up ever so often, this was the first time that I actually went for it. A cool concept to bring in new customers to sample a specific menu to showcase the culinary brilliance of the restaurant. The journey gets exciting, specially now since there are many specialty cuisine restaurants in the city.

Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese- step brothers of Chinese cuisine. So while you have till Sunday (26th Sept) to book your reservations, here’s how to choose from the crowd.

RULE#1 REMOVE RESTAURANTS ALREADY VISITED

The real purpose for me is to discover new places, that I usually would not go to because of distance, lack of knowledge and comfort. I like to use this as a one time pass for the restaurant to woo me.

RULE #2 LOOK UP CUISINES NEVER TRIED BEFORE

Be sure to look up some of the Korean, Oriental and even some Indian cuisines like Bihari, Mizo or Naga-  places that can help you discover regional tastes. Curated menus also help you learn food etiquette ( eg: how to rest your chopsticks, how dunking sushi in soya sauce is not the authentic way of eating it)

RULE#3 LOOK OUT FOR GOOD DEALS

A majority of the time, booking yourself at the fine dining places in 5 star hotels, can turn out to be a steal. You can save close to 50% by visiting on account of RW. Despite the fact that you are eating a set menu, if you particularly like a place, it’s bound to make you happy.

RULE #4 DON’T STOP AT ONE

Since it’s a week long affair, make sure to book atleast 2 experiences to help you make a better choice next time.  One experience can leave you feeling indifferent.

RULE#5

Even if you’re booking a place you know, be sure to check their menu out. I find, the choice of vegetarian, meats , sauces and unique combinations  helps me zero into the kind of experience I would like to book.

From the 2 places I experienced at this Restaurant week- I am sure to be a regular at one!

Why Amitabh’s ‘Pink’ gave me the Blues

I watched #PINK over the weekend, a movie that has received rave reviews by movie critics- after all it’s got Big B. The best way to watch a film is to book tickets without knowing anything about the film, walking into the hall still debating what you think the film is about and watch the cinematic frames weave the story from scratch. That’s what happened to us this time. Other than the name of the film, glorious reviews by critics and the fact that Amitabh Bachchan starred in it, we knew nothing. And that’s why I came out feeling cheated.

Recently I have noticed anything to do with Women starts trending- A recent Tanishq working women ad, Nike’s Da Da Ding, Whisper’s How do girls run etc.  Men think they are showing an upper hand by liking it,  Women think we have to cheer for our own. And that’s exactly what’s happening to Pink.

I am surprised that critics who tear apart other films for inconsistencies, flawed scripts, under developed characters, director faux pas, have waxed lyrical of the film with not one mention of the grave errors in the film. Why?  Apparently women issue films are exempt from the basic movie review check list. That friends in my eyes,is called subject inequality.

For starters, the issues in the film for me were very stereotype. Middle class girls getting harassed by a Political heavyweight’s son and friends. Really Mr Scriptwriter? How about a more real situation? Girls with forcibly visible tattoos- a bad character portrayal. Do women without tattoos not get eve teased? Firing a girl whose objectionable picture pops up on the net. By that logic, very few boys or girls will have jobs left.

Apart from that, technical failures in plenty. Jump in day to night sequences with no justifications, time lapses in story, edits in the film that leave gaps ( A girl is missing from wee hours of the morning till late night and there are no red flags raised by her flatmates) a full fledged court case with only one girl’s parent in attendance, Sarvpriya Vihar resident walking to Deer park (Non Delhi-zens may not get the locational boo boo, but 2 kms is apparently walking distance for an aged Amitabh)

All that apart only 2 things resonated with me

  • Amitabh’s character trying to see the relevance of why opposing counsel only asked the petite Meghalaya born, about her native city – North East.
  • The closing argument was actually the saving grace of the film for me in many ways.     ‘No – means No. No is a sentence in itself and does not need any other word to complete it. No means no- whether said by a girlfriend to boyfriend, prostitute to customer or even wife to husband. ‘

Don’t get me wrong, its a film made with the right intentions, but just because filmmakers choose women centric stories, does not mean critics will applaud the intention whilst throwing the film critique-ing parameters out of the window.

That in itself is sexist isn’t it.
